Most people need 7 to 9 hours of solid sleep a night to feel fully rested. If you go for very long without proper sleep or poor sleep than your physical health and mental abilities will be diminished. You may start gaining weight or get sick easier as your immune system will suffer as well.

When you sleep your body heals itself and restores your chemical balance.  Your brain can also create new connections and your memory should improve.  Without proper rest you will lower your quality of life and even risk an early death.

Here are some signs of sleep deprivation:

  • Feeling tired and sleepy
  • Yawning Excessively
  • Irritability
  • Daytime fatigue

Effects of Sleep deprivation:

Gain Weight:  If you are not getting enough sleep you are more likely to crave a high carbohydrate and high fat food diet and your metabolism is more likely to be slower.  A 2004 study shows that if you sleep less than 6 hours a day, you are 30% more likely to become obese than those who sleep 7 to 9 hours a day.

Skin Problems:  Lack of sleep causes your body to release extra cortisol the stress hormone.  This can break down skin collagen which is the protein that keeps the skin smooth.  It can also cause your body to produce less human growth hormone.  Not getting enough sleep can lead to dark circles and puffy eyes and to more fine lines and wrinkles.

Increased risk of Cancer: A number of studies have shown lack of sleep to an increased risk of cancer especially breast and prostate cancer.

Memory loss: Sleep deprivation makes it harder to store your memories. If you are suffering from sleep deprivation, you will have a harder time learning new things.

Lose your sense or Performance:  Sleep deprivation makes you a poor judge of your own performance. You may feel good but people who suffer from sleep deprivation typically score much lower on performance tests.
